About Me

Edson Oda is a Latin Grammy nominated writer/director and 2017 Sundance Screenwriters Lab Fellow. He was born and raised in São Paulo/Brazil, and is based in Los Angeles --- São Paulo.

Former Advertising Creative - DDB São Paulo, DDB Madrid, Wieden + Kennedy London -  Edson wrote, directed and supervised projects for Philips, Telefonica, Movistar, InBev (Budweiser, Bohemia, and Guaraná Antarctica), C&A, Blockbuster, Whirlpool, Johnson & Johnson, Honda, Nokia, Disney/Pixar, Warner Bros, Crispin and Porter + BoguskyBr and Moleskine. He graduated from the University of São Paulo - bachelor's degree in Communication & Arts with a specialization in Advertising. In 2015, Edson completed his Master of Fine Arts in Film and Production at USC - University of Southern California.

Edson is represented by William Morris Endeavor and The Gotham Group (Film&TV) and by ParanoidBr (Commercials - Brazilian Market).

Awards and Recognitions

Starting his career in advertising, Edson collected awards in the major international festivals including a Gold Lion and three Bronze Lions in Cannes International Creativity Festival. He also was awarded a Gold medal at the New York Festival. Bronze Medal in the Andy Awards. Bronze and Silver Medal in FIAP (Ibero American Advertising Festival). Gold award in El SOL (Latin American Advertising Festival). Gold award in El Ojo de Iberoamericana. 8 Communication & Arts publications. 3 Merit Awards in the One Show Annual. Merit Award in the Art Director Club Annual. 4 Publications in the Lurzer’s Archive Magazine. Silver and Bronze Award in São Paulo Creative Club.

As 24, Edson was picked as one of the top 12 Creative in Brazil under 29 to represent the country in the Cannes Lions International Festival (2009) as a delegate. As 26, the CLIO Awards Festival selected him as one of the Top 12 Creative under 30-year-old.

Still in 2012, Edson wrote and directed the short film “the Writer.” The film won the Django Unchained competition judged by Quentin Tarantino and promoted by Red Bull and the Weinstein Company. In the same year he was nominated for a Latin Grammy - Best Music Video.

In 2013, Edson released the short animation: Malaria. The film won special Jury Award in the Seattle International Film Festival, Audience Award in the Science Fiction+Fantasy Film Festival at EMP Museum, Best Animation Short Film Award in the Milano Film Festival in Italy, and Best Film of the Festival in San Francisco Disposable Film Festival. It was also selected as one of the top 15 Best Science Fiction and Fantasy Short Films of 2013 by the website io9, and won the annual award by the Short of the Week website.

Edson is an Academy Nichol Fellowship in Screenwriting quarterfinalist (Feature Script: Sweet Sadness); Cinequest Screenwriting Competition semifinalist, WeScreenplay quaterfinalist (Feature Script: Nine Days), and 2017 January Sundance Screenwriters Lab Fellow (Nine Days).

Nine Day is also a top ten finalist/honorable mention in the 14th annual American Zoetrope Screenplay Contest judged by Francis Ford Coppola.
